Joseph Yu-shek Cheng is Chair Professor of Political Science and Coordinator of the Contemporary China Research Project, City University of Hong Kong since 1992. His teaching interests are Chinese foreign policy, Hong Kong politics and International politics. Before that, he taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (1977-1989) and the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong (1989-1991). In 1991-92, he was a full-time member of the Central Policy Unit, Government of Hong Kong. He received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Hong Kong, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and the Flinders University of South Australia. He is the founding editor of the Hong Kong Journal of Social Sciences and The Journal of Comparative Asian Development and served as the founding president of the Asian Studies Association of Hong Kong from 2005-2007.
His research interests are Chinese foreign policy, China's domestic politics, Political development in Hong Kong, Local government in Guangdong and International relations in the Asia/Pacific region.
He has published widely on the political development in China and Hong Kong, Chinese foreign policy and local government in southern China. He has recently edited volumes on Challenges and Policy Programmes of China’s New Leadership and The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Its First Decade.
