Prof. Dr. Matthew Goodwin

Prof. Dr. Matthew Goodwin comes from Great Britain. He studied politics and contemporary history at the University of Salford and accomplished his master in political science at the University of Western Ontario in 2004. In 2007 he received his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Bath. There, Goodwin was instructor of the seminars “Key Concepts in Politics” and “Political Ideologies.” He lectured about American politics as well as media and politics, British politics and key concepts in politics.
Afterwards, he went to the University of Manchester, where he now is research associate at the Institute for Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) at the School of Social Sciences. In April he is going to start his postdoctoral research concerning the pathways toward participation in the contemporary extreme right at the University of Manchester, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Goodwin has written a great number of journal articles about his topics. In 2007 for example he published his article “Grandpa’s Fascism and the New Kids on the Block: Contemporary Approaches to the Dark Side of Europe” (in: Ethnopolitics, Vol. 6) and “The Extreme Right in Britain: Still an Ugly Duckling but for How Long?” (in: Political Quarterly, Vol. 78). “Backlash in the Hood: Determinants of Support for the British National Party at Local Level” is the title of an article he published in the Journal of Contemporary European Studies in 2008. In addition he has been and is still working on several book chapters, working papers and book projects, one of which carries the title “The New British Fascism: Rise of the British National Party.”
Goodwin is member of the Political Science Association (PSA), the Democracy, Citizens and Elections Research Network (DCERN) at the University of Manchester and the Standing Group on Democracy and Extremism of the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR), of which he is reviews editor since the year 2007.
