Shinkai Karokhail

Shinkai Karokhail was born in a rural Islamic village in the province of Kabul in 1962. From 1979 to 1984, she became a trained medical doctor at Kabul University. In 1985, she earned her diploma in English at the National Institute of Modern Languages in Islamabad, Pakistan. Karokhail is a member of various committees and organisations as for example ACTA (Afghan Coalition for Transparency and Accountability, a civil society initiative), GEP (Gender Equality Platform), and PTRO (Peace Training and Research Organization). She is a founding and board member of the Afghan Women’s Educational Centre (AWEC). AWEC works with women and children to improve their education, as well as to advocate and create awareness for women’s rights. Since 2005, Karokhail has been member of the Afghan Parliament, where she stands in for a balanced budget, equal development, and women’s rights. In 2007, she founded the Women Parliamentarian and Women’s Rights Defender Network, and has been chairperson since 2010. Her focus is on peace education projects, support for women in prison, and projects in the areas of education, health, peace, welfare, and psycho-social activities.
