Speaker
Jörn Müller-Quade is an IT security expert and professor at the Institute for Cryptography and Security (IKS) in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Together with his institute, Jörn Müller-Quade developed a voting machine that offers the same standard of security as paper voting – "Bingo Voting". Instead of using pen and paper, the voter casts his or her vote on a screen and then receives a receipt that tells the voter – and only the voter – which political party was voted for. In 2008 his research group was awarded the 100,000 euro Germany IT Security Prize of the Horst-Görtz Foundation for the development of this secure voting procedure.
In addition to secure voting procedures, the IKS also researches physical aspects of security, e.g., code exchange methods and attacks on bypass channels on the physical levels, as well as the very topical question of the extent to which cloud services can be secure. Demonstrable security guarantees are a central topic that spans this research – i.e., formal proofs that mathematically demonstrate that no attacks are possible within a certain system. Coherent abstractions even allow for symbolic security proofs that can be verified by machines.
Professor Jörn Müller-Quade was born in 1967, and studied information technology in Erlangen and Karlsruhe. He received his PhD in 1998 at the University of Karlsruhe in the field of computational algebra.
